Whilst SIMS can be easily be used by a range of staff in school, it is useful for someone responsible for the system has a basic understanding of the ways in which assessment data is stored and surfaced by the system.

SIMS stores assessment data in Aspects. Aspects can be set up by schools to store the following information types:

  • Grades - these will be defined in a Grade Set associated with the Aspect

  • Numbers - either integer or decimal

  • Age - mm/yy

  • Comments - up to 1,000 characters of free text

Each Aspect can be used to store any number of date stamped assessments to build a history

Any assessment held in an aspect can also be associated with a particular Result Set, reflecting that that particular result relates to a particular milestone; for example a Key Stage Validated Result, a Yr 1 Baseline Assessment, a Y3 Spring Term Assessment and so on. Each Aspect / Result Set combination can only contain one result

Assessments may be entered and reviewed on a Marksheet. A Marksheet is a combination of Aspects arranged as columns and any group of pupils known to SIMS in Rows. The Marksheet columns can be set to display values for information and can also perform calculations on the data.

The configuration of columns is held in a marksheet Template; in this way similar mark sheets can be created for a class (known as a Registration Group), Year Group or any other group known to SIMS.
